Well, to be fair, you're absolutely correct that the word has been used that way for years. Wrongly.
It makes no difference what you call anything, of course. Like Humpty-Dumpty, a word means whatever you decide it means.
I should say that the confusion between size and resolution causes major fuck-ups in the printing industry and I've been a victim of it too often to feel very lenient about it!
