Compare and contrast drawing tablet features -

Given that Christmas (the holidays...) is so near, I am thinking about buying myself a drawing tablet. Having been to the WACOM site, I have checked out the options and am a bit... humbled... by the prices for such devices.

I suppose my question for you all is the following: How much drawing tablet does an amateur-but-hoping-to-go-pro-one-day designer need for average work? I mean, do I really need one that is huge? How many inches should I be looking at if I really am feeling the thin-wallet syndrome of late but still want something I won't grow out of?
