I worked as a tech support guy on the phone for an ISP that was closing down, to try and get some more money they started randomly charging people £9.99 - around 20,000 customers
, this was deliberate but I had to pretend it was down to billing sofware error, all those that phoned and complained got their money back, the company still ended up making around £100,000 before they shut down the ISP completely and concentrated on web development. Some of the funniest phone calls of my life working there
