Well, in a nutshell that's what he said. Is there in fact some system that you would recommend I incorporate into the website that would allow me to carry this out? Also, is there a better system than FTP? Or was that really only a rumour?

There's always SSH for uploading. It's much more secure and most of the geeks tend to favour SSH over FTP.
