Me and a friend created a site for a friend of a friend over a year ago, and charged absolutely stupid money for it, £200 I seem to remember, largely becuase we hadn't done any paid work before and we did in our spare time as something to do. The site actually turned out very well, and they were more than happy with the end result, and had many people tell them they really liked the site.
About 6 months after this, they mentioned having other things added to the site, but these were really vague so we said 'about £700'. Apparantley we quoted this by email but neither us or them can find said email. Anyway, a couple of weeks ago we finally get the actual content from them which worked out to about 25-30 additional pages. I then spent my entire weekend mocking up designs based on how it could look. We presented them and they were very happy, so we put a proposal together with our price - which was higher than what we originally 'quoted', but fair nontheless. When they got the quote they kicked off big time and said we had mucked them about blah blah, and have basically decided to go elsewhere. However, they have my design work that I showed to them, so we sent an email asking them to destroy this artwork if they were going to go elsewhere for the work, as was part of our proposal, we hadn't been paid for it, and was therefore our property.
Have we done anything wrong here that could potentially land us in any legal hot water from them?
From our point of view, we have NEVER put anything in writing that we will do anything for them, and all dates were only ever verbally agreed. They were also the ones that decided to go elsewhere, we were prepared to finish the project if they were happy with the quote. Do they have any legal right to complain that we wont let them use our design work for the proposed additions? Or that we have quoted a different price to what they were assuming?
Thanks for any advice as this is making me really nervous - they sent us a bitchy email, so we sent one back justifying our actions. We then realised they have screenshots of our artwork and didn't want them to use them without paying us for them, so sent another email asking that they destroy the work. We haven't had any reply and fear they may be devising some sort of legal angle.
Cheers
