American has it's main roots in English, yes, but since this is an ethnic melting pot, and along with ethinicity comes language. There are also the dialects and such, like there is a Dutch language and a German language, but nobody trips about that. To me, Dutch is just a German dialect. American's have a dialect as well, why can't we be learning American IV in school rather than English IV??

I'm reading a book called 'Why do people hate America'. Theres a section in there about how the majority of Americans are quite ignorant to cultures, ideas and beliefs beyond their own. You seem to be confirming this. Maybe you should read it.
